Custom-Fit Mouthguards – Why you should wear one after Orthodontic treatment

Your braces have been removed and now you have your amazing smile for life… it is important to protect that smile from trauma whilst training and playing any contact sports. These sports include AFL, rugby, hockey and martial arts as well as some sports considered ‘non-contact’ – basketball, netball, soccer and cricket.

A custom-fit mouthguard is recommended by the Australian Dental Association due to its personalised fit and greater protection when compared to an over-the-counter boil and bite mouthguard. Custom-fit mouthguards are easier to speak and breathe with and will absorb and spread pressure from trauma. A boil and bite mouthguard can easily come out of the mouth due it’s loose fit and makes speech and breathing more difficult. They also offer reduced protection. So why run the risk?

Dental trauma can include tooth fractures, nerve damage, knocked out teeth, broken jaws and damage to the soft tissue.

Protect the investment in your wonderful smile and contact your dentist to arrange a custom-fit mouthguard today.

We also recommend a full clean and check-up now that your braces are off, and don’t forget your scheduled visits with us too!
